NMEA 0183 Multiplexers/Combiners
NMEA 0183 Multiplexers, sometimes called combiners, collect NMEA 0183 data from multiple talker devices and then combine them serially so that they can be output to other listener NMEA 0183 devices via a single connection. Generally the input (listner)side of the multiplexer is opto-isolated from the output (talker) side of the multiplxer. This is done per the NMEA 0183 specification and is provied to help prevent ground loops between the talkers and the listners.
Some multiplexers are very simple and just collect and pass data. Other NMEA 0183 multiplexers can perform more sophisticated data handling such as port prioritization, sentence filtering, Bluetooth or WiFi broadcasting, SeaTalk to NMEA conversion, network adaption and other sophisticated functions.
