Actisense WGX-1 NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000® to Wi-Fi Gateway
The WGX-1 is an intelligent NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 WiFi Gateway with bi-directional conversion capability.
Transfer data from an NMEA 2000 backbone to any device (e.g. laptop, tablet or smartphone) connected to the WGX-1 via Wi-Fi and additionally convert data bi-directionally between NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 using Actisense’s renowned conversion engine. The WGX also acts as a wired gateway, allowing for transfer or conversion of data between existing NMEA 0183/NMEA2000 instruments. Actisense-i is a suite of diagnostic tools and health checker for your network which comes free with the product. NMEA 2000 data logging is also possible if an SD card is inserted (not supplied).
NMEA 2000 Certified
The WGX-1 has built-in conversion of NMEA 2000 messages into NMEA 0183 sentences and vice-versa. Allowing a wide variety of vessel data (e.g. position, speed, course, wind speed, depth, engine data, AIS messages etc.) to be shared with connected devices and applications both wired and wireless.
Stream NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 data over Wi-Fi with ease, making it simple to integrate with your favorite boating apps.
Data can be logged to an internal micro SD card (not supplied) for post voyage analysis. This is very useful for analyzing race data, generating logbooks, diagnosing problems or even sharing your voyage details.
Actisense-i comes included as standard. Benefit from our full suite of diagnostic tools to help check and diagnose potential issues on a boat’s electronics network, including voltage issues, and the working status of all devices attached to the network, Actisense-i has been designed to save installers and boaters time and ultimately, money, by giving them confidence in their electronics onboard.
The WGX-1 has the legendary Actisense “Reliability Built-In” along with useful diagnostic LEDs, internal antenna, enhanced password security, full certification and all packaged in an extremely rugged IP67 case.

Uses
The WGX-1 can operate as a conversion gateway between NMEA 0183 legacy systems and NMEA 2000 networks, as a transfer interface for NMEA 2000 data between network and PC, and also as a wireless gateway for streaming NMEA data to peripheral devices.
Converting legacy equipment
A common scenario for a WGX is connecting legacy NMEA 0183 equipment, into modern NMEA 2000 systems.
A perfect example is a vessel with NMEA 0183 GPS, Wind and Depth sensors, but there’s also an NMEA 2000 network with MFDs. Getting the NMEA 0183 data onto the MFD requires the data to be converted and output as NMEA 2000 PGNs.
The WGX will receive, convert and transmit NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 data bi-directionally.
Cost is the main benefit here, where a WGX costs only a fraction of an NMEA 2000 GPS for example. Save money, time and space by using a WGX and leaving your existing legacy equipment in place.
Connecting to a PC
On-board computers running charting apps are becoming more common. To get the data into these NMEA 2000 programs, an interface is required between the NMEA 2000 network and the PC. The WGX will transfer all data to/from an NMEA 2000 network and PC.
Many devices also require configuration on the network, which can be done via the Actisense WGX-1 (if the manufacturer specifies our gateway). Our products such as the EMU-1, NGW-1, and NGX-1 are configured via Actisense Toolkit which can be done using a WGX-1.
Wireless connectivity
The demand for wireless connectivity is increasing, with a significant rise in wireless applications following this. The requirements vary, from wireless data streaming to a secondary device/display, through to remote connectivity and monitoring of vessels and their logs.
The Actisense WGX-1 Wireless gateway is an ideal, cost-effective, out-of-the-box solution which requires minimal configuration.
A common scenario with the WGX-1 is the user requiring a connection to their mobile phone/tablet to use an application such as Navionics. This is done in a few easy steps where the WGX-1 is set up to output in NMEA 0183 via one of the data servers via TCP. The IP address of the WGX-1 and the Port Number of the Data Server are then entered into the application and the connection is made.
As the WGX-1 can act as a client (connects as a device to an existing IP Network), an IP address can be automatically assigned to it (if DHCP). Using this, if the user has remote access to the network from their office/home, the network can be viewed by connecting to the WGX-1, where the network voltage, device list and other pieces of info are all listed.
Having the ability to convert, transfer and wirelessly stream data all through one device makes the WGX the ‘ultimate’ gateway, where other manufacturers require multiple products to do this, we do it with one low-cost, highly intelligent product.
